We’re yet to see Nintendo return to the Super Mario Galaxy series with a Wii U entry, but fans now have an idea of what the game might look like after Nintendo revealed a Mario Galaxy stage in Smash Bros. Wii U.

“A new stage, Mario Galaxy!”, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai wrote on Miiverse. “The pull of gravity emanates from the centre of the planet, so this will require using brand-new tactics.”

As for a proper Mario Galaxy sequel for Wii U, Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto says the firm’s current focus on Super Mario 3D Land doesn’t mean the Galaxy series has been put to bed.

“Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn’t mean we’ll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game,” explained Miyamoto in the latest Iwata Asks.

He continued: “The same team can’t make both at the same time. And we can’t bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it. I suppose we could idealistically make both in Tokyo, but we want to do something new too, so there was that dilemma.”

He concluded: “Personally, I would like to take on a variety of new challenges with Super Mario Galaxy and design 2D Super Mario games in an easy-to-understand way within certain restraints.”

We hope a proper Mario Galaxy sequel would look better than this, but it certainly allows fans to dream.
