Capcom has announced it has shipped two million units of Street Fighter IV to retailers worldwide, a total which is some 300,000 more than the 1.7 million sales estimate the company made back in November 2008.

“Capcom has achieved the feat of breaking the two million copy mark despite the economic crisis with this first iteration of the “Street Fighter” series in 11 years,” read a Capcom press release.

The Street Fighter franchise has sold over 500,000 arcade machines and 27 million console games. Capcom hopes to grow the franchise’s audience through the imminent release of the Hollywood movie, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

“The movie was developed in order to help rebuild the “Street Fighter” brand by drawing in new fans and reinvigorating fans of old,” stated Capcom.

Street Fighter IV is out now on Xbox 360 and PS3, with a PC version to follow at a later date.
