Capcom’s Street Fighter franchise is being turned into a live-action TV series by Entertainment One/Mark Gordon. Three key members of the web series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist will be involved in the project, namely Joey Ansah, Jacqueline Quella, and Mark Wooding.

According to Deadline, the TV series will pluck its core story elements from Street Fighter II’s World Warrior arc, and shines the spotlight on four major characters: Ryu, Ken, Guile, and Chun-Li. As expected, they’re pitted against M. Bison, the powerful head of the global criminal organisation, Shadaloo.

All four heroes eventually cross paths in the World Warrior Tournament, an event devised by Bison to find the toughest combatant on the planet, where they’ll need to channel their strength, skills, intelligence, and loyalty to survive the battles that lay ahead and emerge the ultimate victor.

‘Street Fighter is a global tour de force franchise, having garnered immense worldwide commercial success and built a vast devoted fanbase that has only grown through its 30 year legacy. We are thrilled to be teaming up with Joey, Jacqueline and Mark, who are already so deeply connected to this brand, to bring this adored story to television audiences everywhere,’ said eOne’s President and Chief Content Officer, Film, Television and Digital, Mark Gordon.

‘A particular strength of Street Fighter is the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe.’

Street Fighter has seen numerous adaptations over the years, although the less said about the two feature-length films (Street Fighter and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) the better. More successful was the aforementioned Assassin’s Fist, which generated 16 million viewers during its initial 2014 run and prompted Capcom to commission a follow-up, Street Fighter: World Warrior.

Capcom will launch the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection on May 29.
