ShiftUp have become renowned for developing the much beloved Stellar Blade, but, in addition to the PlayStation great, they are a prominent part of the gacha genre with Nikke Goddess of Victory and Destiny Child. While Nikke Goddess of Victory is still going strong, servers for Destiny Child were shut down back in 2023. While the closure of Destiny Child was disappointing for some, the good news is that ShiftUp have just provided a first look at their next new game, and it’s possible it could be a new gacha experience.

Stellar Blade and Nikke devs deliver first look at new game

As relayed by Genki_JPN on X, ShiftUp, the studio behind Stellar Blade and Nikke Goddess of Victory, have provided a first look at their next new game. On the studio’s official website, what was previously called Project Witches has now been renamed Project Spirits. The description for Project Spirits is as follows:

“This is ShiftUp’s new flagship project, a subculture cross-platform title that advocates ‘EASTERN Fantasy’. This is a new IP introduced after ‘Stellar Blade’ and ‘Nikke’, and is being developed as a top-class quality game in the industry based on the IP production capabilities that ShiftUp has proven through its projects so far.”

In addition to the above blurb, there are also a number of job openings for the game. These job openings hint that the game is an open-world action RPG with sword/martial arts combat specifically compared to Zenless Zone Zero and Ghost of Tshushima. It’s also stated that the game is targeting a 2027 release.

There’s no mention of platforms or if it is a gacha game, but it’s looking likely to be a gacha experience as the job listings also mention the need for a “sustainable meta design and balance system,” along with a “Flow of new content and repeated motivation design”.

If it is a gacha game, then it could be new competition for Hoyoverse’s holy trinity of Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero, and it could also be an alternative to Wuthering Waves. As for anyone concerned about ShiftUp abandoning traditional single-player experiences, the good news is that a Stellar Blade sequel is reportedly happening.
