Steam now lets users trade virtual items and gifts with other users.
Which means you can finally trade those spare copies of Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 you got from buying The Orange Box all the way back in 2007, and maybe you’ll finally be able to get the Apple earbuds for Team Fortress 2?
Currently only Steam gifts and Team Fortress 2 items are supported, with plans to include Portal 2 in the near future. Valve hopes to have ‘several’ third-party games using the service in the next few months.
You can sign up to the Trading Beta by going into your Steam settings. Currently it is only possible to trade with users (via the friends list or group chat) that are also participating in the beta.
Valve’s Trading FAQ has all the information.
“Any game you’ve purchased from the store as a gift, or received as an Extra Copy, can be traded to other users. They can be used to trade for other Gifts, or for items in Team Fortress 2. We’ve added a new checkout option to the Store when purchasing a gift so you can save it for trading or sending later, to support users who want to save games for trade fodder,” said Valve.
The new Steam client also allows you to tag your friends list into groups.
