Valve has revealed multiple devices that will be available for use with SteamOS – that it announced on Monday – available in 2014, developed by different manufacturers in order to fit an individual’s needs.

Valve also said it will run a beta this year with 300 Steam users to test out its own ‘Steam Box’ – the company’s prototype – which will be a high-performance system, optimised for gaming and ‘for the living room’.

To be eligible to access the beta, you have to ensure you have agreed to the terms and conditions and completed four basic tasks before 25 October:

  • Join the Steam Universe community group
  • Make 10 Steam friends
  • Create a public Steam Community profile
  • Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode

On the project, Valve said: “The specific machine we’re testing is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware. Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors.”

As well as being compatible with a mouse and keyboard, Valve announced that each of the Steam Machines will work with gamepads. Whether that’s a bespoke controller or, for example, an Xbox 360 pad is not yet known.
