Steam users can now request a refund on almost all items purchased on the store, Valve has announced.

“You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam – for any reason,” says Valve. “Maybe your PC doesn’t meet the hardware requirements; maybe you bought a game by mistake; maybe you played the title for an hour and just didn’t like it.

“It doesn’t matter. Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any reason.”

The only requirement for game refunds is that the request is made within 14 days of purchase and the the title has been played for less that two hours.

Refunds will be issued within a week of approval by Valve.

The two week, two hours rule applies to games and software applications only. DLC refunds will be issued if requested within 14 days of purchase and “if the underlying title has been played for less than two hours since the DLC was purchased, so long as the DLC has not been consumed, modified”.

Movies and gifts are non-refundable.

It’s worth pointing out that those who are deemed to be abusing the system may be denied refunds. However, Valve points out that it does “not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price”.
