Starbreeze has announced plans to develop a new game in the hit online shooter franchise ‘CrossFire’ built specifically for western audiences.
The game will be an all-new co-op FPS for PC built using the Valhalla game engine, that is designed to be “further expanded over time to attract long term interest from players”. Starbreeze describes the game as a “premium first-person-shooter”, suggesting it may not be free-to-play.
Starbreeze previously developed critically-acclaimed shooters The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and EA’s 2012 title Syndicate.
The original CrossFire is said to have attracted more than 500 million users and 6 million concurrent players, making it one of the most popular online shooters in the world. It is said to be particularly popular in China, attracting over $1,300m in revenue during 2014 alone.
The announcement forms part of a $40m investment into Starbreeze from CrossFire’s Korean developer Smilegate, which has also seen Overkill’s The Walking Dead game pushed into 2017.
“Asian, European and US gamers have a lot to look forward to as a result of this collaboration,” said CIO of Smilegate Group Joon Ho Sung. “The aim for both of us is to bring the best from our home markets to new audiences. With its impressive Payday track record, Starbreeze is an ideal partner for bringing the CrossFire franchise to western markets and new titles to our home markets. This is a long term strategic partnership for us.”
A release date for the game has yet to be announced, but Starbreeze highlights the fact that a CrossFire movie is set to release in 3-5 years’ time, providing a “valuable marketing opportunity” for the new game.
