Starbreeze Studios and Payday 2 developer Overkill Software are developing a new first-person co-op Walking Dead title, series creator Robert Kirkman has announced.
Announcing the game on Steam, Kirkman explained that he was a “huge fan of what OVERKILL and Starbreeze have been able to do with PAYDAY 2,” and that he was “excited to be able to announce that Skybound is partnering with OVERKILL to make a Walking Dead game.
“I’m happy to say that it’s the co-op game that all of the Walking Dead fans have been waiting for.”
The game will be called ‘Overkill’s The Walking Dead’.
To celebrate the announcement, Kirkman revealed a new barbed wire baseball bat is available to download now for the PC version of Payday 2.
Further details on the new game, such as when we might see it, have yet to be revealed.
UPDATE: Overkill has released the first trailer, with the description suggesting that the game may not be due to launch until 2016.
“After 34 days it’s finally time to reveal what’s next,” reads the blurb. “In 2016 Washington will fall.”
UPDATE 2: Starbreeze has revealed that the game will be built on a version of the Diesel engine that has been “updated for the next generation”.
“The collaboration between Starbreeze Studios and our partner Skybound Interactive will deliver something uniquely exciting for our millions of fans,” said Starbreeze CEO Andersson Klint. “We’re two independents joining forces to create the ultimate survival horror game. With Robert on the team, we will bring The Walking Dead into the world of first-person shooter co-op games.
“It will be gameplay focused, ferocious and bring chaos to the traditional industry model – from us developers straight to you. This time it’s big – don’t walk alone.”
