EA and BioWare’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will be released this September, development sources have told MCV.

Late last year EA said the game would be launched at some point between April and December 2011, although a previously confirmed spring date seemed likely.

It’s a project which needs to launch without a hitch, with MMO gamers expecting a level of polish which matches Blizzard’s ever-improving World of Warcraft.

Earlier this week it was reported that EA’s investors had begun to question if the game would achieve success, which clearly isn’t a positive sign in the run-up to launch.

A September launch would put the game right at the beginning of the silly season, which traditionally sees a seemingly endless stream of new releases hitting stores each week. How this would affect the launch is difficult to assess.

No matter when the game launches, the pressure to have a hit won’t let up – the project’s scale is reported to eclipse the combined efforts of Mass Effect 1&2, Dragon Age, Knights of the Old Republic and Baldur’s Gate. An anonymous BioWare dev even claimed that over $300 million had been spent on the game.
