EA has invested $500 million in MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, according to Doug Creutz of analyst firm Cowen & Co.

In an interview with Marketwatch, Creutz stated the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic represents one of the riskiest moves in the career of EA boss John Riccitiello.

“I think it’s safe to say that the total all-in investment in ‘Star Wars’ is probably approaching half a billion dollars,” he explained.

“EA has minimised its risks as much as it can on this bet, but it’s still a risky bet. To the extent that any one game defines [Riccitiello’s] tenure, it’s going to be how ‘Star Wars’ performs.”

Creutz has previously said the MMO is likely to see 3 million sales in its first year, based on pre-order activity, with a subscriber count reaching and staying at 2 million by the end of the year.

So far Star Wars: The Old Republic has seen over 1 million registered subscribers since launch.
