Cryptic has published an official Star Trek Online FAQ detailing a host of information on the upcoming PC and console MMO.
First off, Cryptic confirmed that the game will feature an economy, but one that “makes sense in the Star Trek universe”.
“Since the Federation has explicitly done away with money, expect bartering and trading of goods to be an important part of the economy. Less tangible forms of economics such as Reputation are also not out of the question,” explains the FAQ.
The game is to be set in 2409, approximately 30 years after the events in Star Trek Nemesis. Technology has advanced and the galaxy is said to be a much more volatile place. Players will have the option to crate their own unique race with a custom look and attributes or opt to play as one of many predefined races. These include Human, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, Orion, Gorn, and several others yet to be announced.
As has previously been stated, each player will be the captain of their own ship, but will have to earn the responsibility and skill to command larger and more powerful vessels. Cryptic also notes that whoever commands the ship is the ‘Captain’ and this does not mean the player has reached the Captain rank.
Cryptic has also offered further insight into the career paths on offer. As the Captain of your ship you’ll have a crew to command, but this won’t limit your role. Players will be able to choose from a host of career paths, including Engineer, Tactical Officer, Doctor, Science Officer and many more.
