Last weekend, the huge Alpha 3.6 update rolled out for all Star Citizen backers, and introduced a legal system to the online multiplayer space trading and combat game.

Gone are the days of lawless plundering, hacking and speeding at the speed of… well, light. There are 19 laws that have been added that regulate space crime and terrestrial crime, though tolerances and consequences to any funny business vary depending on which region you’re in. For example, commit a crime in Stanton and the full force of the United Empire of Earth will come down around you. The wretched hive of scum and villainy GrimHEX won’t care so much.

In fact, new missions are now available that encourage illegal hacking and black market trades, which should shake gameplay up considerably. Be aware that the game’s NPC law enforcement will pursue you if you’re caught red-handed.  The game offers three options to you if the spacecops come after you: flee the region you’re wanted in, pay off the accumulated bounty, or hack the records and wipe your slate clean. But if the law can’t nab you, the game will task other players to take you down if your crime stat reaches notorious levels.

Along with this, Alpha 3.6 fixes some gameplay bugs, allows purchasing of nearly all ships using in-game currency, adds a neat ship hover mode, integrates new weapons, and lets the players interact with one another using voice or in-game chat.
