Squadron 42, the single-player campaign half of the indefinitely in-development MMO space sim Star Citizen, is seemingly coming to current-gen or next-gen consoles.
Scheduled to finally release in 2026, after being announced in 2012, Squadron 42 is set to launch on PC. However, developer Cloud Imperium Games is hiring new developers with experience in console development for the single-player game.
Is Squadron 42 bringing Star Citizen to console?
Spotted by fans online, two new job listings for Cloud Imperium Games tease an upcoming console launch of its single-player cinematic spin-off.
In the job listing for the game’s Cinematics Animator at the developer’s studio in Frankfurt, CIG asks for someone with “professional experience in game animation development, ideally on current/next-gen consoles”.
The very same description is used for another job description for a Cinematics Animator for the developer’s studio in Manchester, England.
Back when Star Citizen was announced in 2012, the studio explained that they would want to bring their game to console. However, at the time, the hardware wasn’t powerful enough to support the massive space simulator. Back then, the current-gen hardware was the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
While Star Citizen is still a performance hog on current-gen PC hardware, it could come to console in a playable state. Of course, how they adapt the game’s control scheme to a controller is a different story.
Squadron 42 was announced as feature-complete back in 2023 with brand-new gameplay showing spaceship and first-person combat. At the time, the game looked pretty damn awesome, but only time will tell if CIG has managed to meld everything together into a satisfying single-player experience.
At the time of writing, the core Star Citizen game is still in development with no confirmed 1.0 release window. Hopefully, the same will actually release sometime in our lifetime.
