No, I’ve not gone mad – we’re not talking about Final Fantasy XII, but a true sequel to the franchise’s first foray into the MMO arena. The new massively multiplayer online RPG is said to be in development for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows Vista. Unfortunately that’s all there is to tell at the moment as no further information has been made available.

We’ll be sure to let you know when Square Enix decides to release any more information.

Update: Well it didn’t take long for Square Enix to deny the reports. This is what the company had to say in a press release today.

The Company did not make such an announcement and has not made any decisions resembling those detailed in the media report,” reads the statement.

As the Company announced in May 2005, it is currently developing an online title for next-generation platforms including game consoles and PCs; however, this title is being developed as a completely new MMORPG. We will disclose further details of this title, including platform compatibility, immediately after any relevant decisions are made.

In addition, the Company continuously plans to release expansion packs for Final Fantasy XI, available on PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Windows, as well as perform version updates.

There you have it then.
