Square Enix is “targeting” a spring 2010 release for Final Fantasy XIII.

The news came during Microsoft’s E309 press conference, where producer Yoshinori Kitase premiered the world’s first look at the game running on Xbox 360.

He also revealed that the Final Fantasy series has sold a whopping 85 million units worldwide.

He said: “It’s been over 20 years since the first Final Fantasy was released in 1987. Over the last 20 years Final Fantasy has grown to be one of the most loved RPG series worldwide and has sold over 85 million units.

“Last year at E3 we shocked the world by announcing that Final Fantasy XIII will be coming to Xbox 360, the first time a major new Final Fantasy instalment has come to any Xbox platform.

“We’re happy to announce that we’re targeting a spring 2010 release.”

The gameplay demo, which showed lead characters Lightning and Sazh battling a giant robot mech enemy, revealed new information on the game’s battle system. Four Active Time gauges allow the player to attack enemies consecutively with wider tactics. Odin, one of the game’s summoned monsters, was also premiered during the demo, defeating the mech with a single, powerful blow.

We’ll have more on Final Fantasy XIII from E3 very soon.
