Deus Ex: Human Revolution came under fire yesterday when one of its NPC’s, ‘Letitia the Trash Lady’, was branded a racial stereotype by critics of the game.
Adam Jensen meets Letitia rummaging through bins in the fictional Detroit City of 2027. She is a criminal informant of sorts, who provides Jensen with additional information about the city. While she’s depicted as being homeless, people have been more concerned with her ‘slave-era’ dialect (see video below), which has apparently caused offence.
“Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a fictional story which reflects the diversity of the world’s future population by featuring characters of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds,” Square Enix responded to the claims.
“While these characters are meant to portray people living in the year 2027, it has never been our intention to represent any particular ethnic group in a negative light.”
Deus Ex was the second best-selling game in August, only beaten by Zumba fitness, which had an extra three weeks to shift the copies. It scored an impressive 9/10 in our review.
