The latest Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase gave us a new look at The Adventures of Elliot The Millennium Tales, a brand new HD-2D RPG headed to Nintendo Switch 2. This showcased its strong Chrono Trigger inspirations and gave it a release date of June 18, 2026.

First announced within a previous Nintendo Partner Direct in July 2025, Millennium Tales is Square Enix’s crack at translating its HD-2D style into a more action-based title. It moves away from a traditional turn-based formula, instead using a real-time battle system.

What’s more, our story trailer shows a story that places time-travel front and centre, much like classic 1995 Square Enix JRPG Chrono Trigger.

Our hero Elliot is a jack of all trades who can use multiple unique weapons, which have disadvantages and advantages against the abundance of different enemies.

Elliot’s fairy companion, Faie, is also here to help, boasting her own attacks and even teleportation magic for traversal sections. She can also attack enemies directly and be controlled by a second player in a co-op mode.

A second chance

The travels of Elliot and his fairy companion Faie will take them across four different ages over a thousand years, reminding us of the journey across time that is central to Chrono Trigger’s epoch-spanning central plot.

This RPG isn’t helmed by the same creators, however. Rather, the names behind Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default are taking the reins to tell a brand new tale. What’s more, Millennium Tales centres on one central protagonist as opposed to the ensemble approach that’s more common in JRPGs.

The Adventures of Elliot The Millennium Tales is releasing on June 18, 2026, with a demo now available for the game on Nintendo Switch 2. We can’t wait to experience this fresh fantasy tale for ourselves.
