The NPD Group has confirmed US hardware and software sales for September, with Marvel's Spider-Man web-slinging its way into pole position.

Insomniac Games' critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 title managed to fend off some stiff competition, including NBA 2K19 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which had to settle for second and third place, respectively.

Spider-Man's accomplishments don't stop there, however. The wall-crawler's latest title recorded the seventh largest launch ever for a PlayStation title, as well as notching up the highest launch month dollar sales for a PlayStation exclusive game in the brand's entire history.

'Marvel’s Spider-Man achieved launch month sales 37 percent higher than the combined launch month sales of all other Spider-Man games released since The NPD Group began tracking in 1995,' said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella.

Meanwhile, Sony's PS4 came out on top as the best-selling hardware platform for September. However, the NPD noted that Xbox One continues to perform well, with Microsoft's platform pulling in more cash than it did last year.

'Sony’s PlayStation 4 remains the best-selling console hardware platform year to date. The PS4 Slim System 1TB was the month’s best-selling hardware item in both dollars and units.'
