Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has been a huge hit on current-gen consoles and PC, showing how powerful these systems can be. However, shortly after release, fans discovered an infuriating launch issue making the game unplayable on Steam Deck and Linux, but Saber Interactive issued a fix.
It can be frustrating to gauge how much the Steam Deck can take since it can play games like the Silent Hill 2 remake well. However, the system also struggles to play plenty AAA titles, with Final Fantasy 16 as a primary example. Considering how fans are already begging Nintendo for a Switch 2, we imagine they will do the same for a second Deck.
Space Marine 2 is now playable on Steam Deck
A community post from Focus Entertainment detailed hotfix 3.1 for Space Marine 2. Like the name of this patch suggests, this is just a quick and easy fix that takes care of various small bugs plaguing the game.
Without further ado, here are the patch notes:
- Fixed several crashes
- Fixed heavy stutters on some CPUs
- Fixed launch issue on Linux and Steam Deck
- Fixed issue with dynamic resolution and ultrawide screens
- Fixed issue with upscalers using wrong resolution parameters
Steam Deck users are thrilled to see that the launch issue has been fixed since it means the action-packed title should be more playable on the handheld once more. It’s doubtful that this game will go over 30FPS on the system, but any fixes that make this heavyweight space shooter better on Deck are good enough for many.
From Unsupported to Playable?
At the time of writing, Space Marine 2 is still listed as “Unsupported” on ProtonDB, though it’s gold rating does mean that the Warhammer title is more than playable on Valve’s handheld. Usually, games with the “Unsupported” label have online multiplayer that goes against the system’s Easy Anti-Cheat and this game is no exception.
It’s not known if this update will change the game’s verification status on Steam Deck. Considering how multiplayer-centric the game is, we aren’t sure it will ever go beyond “Playable,” though it’s not like Steam Deck players pay attention to that. Most users of the system will check out any game they want and tinker their way around to make it bearable.
