After refusing to confirm persistent rumours that a new, reworked PSP was to be launched, Sony has today announced that their handheld is to go through something of a transformation. Though visually the changes are nowhere near as significant as those that saw the DS evolve into the DS Lite, there have been several developments under the PSP’s bonnet.

As well as being 19% slimmer and 33% lighter, and featuring subtle changes such as repositioned speakers, slightly improved D-pad and a video-out port which now means games, UMD movies and memory stick content can be viewed on a television. A longer battery life will also benefit gamers, enabling extended play sessions.

The new handheld, which retains the title of its predecessor, will be available in black, ceramic white, silver and several more outlandish colours, and has been slated for a September release across Europe, North America and Japan.
