Reports are surfacing that Sony is planning to spoil the launch of the highly anticipated Xbox 360 FPS Halo 3 with the announcement of a new, 40GB entry-level PS3 that will retail somewhere in the region of £300.
If true, the news will have gamers who have been waiting for a PS3 price cut jumping for joy, and provides Microsoft with an unwanted distraction ahead of what may become the biggest game launch ever.
Sky News is reporting that Sony has turned to Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn, the same company that produces the PS2, to make the low-specced version, and that the 80GB model will continue to be made by ASUSTeK.
Sky News says Sony could ditch the console’s USB ports or backwards compatibility in order to sell the new 40GB PS3 cheaply. Rumours suggest the model would cost US gamers $399, or around £300 in the UK, going head to head with Microsoft’s recently released Xbox 360 Elite.
We’ll keep our eyes firmly pointed at Sony HQ for any confirmation of the rumour, and as always, you’ll be the first to know.
