Strong sales of Sony’s home consoles has led to the company posting a profit for the first quarter of the financial year, the company has confirmed.
Sony sold 3.5 million PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4s during the last quarter, though specifics on the split between the two consoles were not detailed. Xbox One and Xbox 360 sold just 1.1 million units combined in the same period.
The Game and Network Services division sales generated $2.55 billion in the three months ending June 30 2014, a 95.7 per cent increase year-on-year. The entire games division made a $43 million profit compared to the $159 million loss last year.
Sony’s handhelds (Vita, PSP and Vita TV) shipped 750,000 were shipped during the quarter, 150,000 more than the same time last year. 85 million games were also sold during the quarter, up from 68 million.
