Sony has confirmed it wasn’t ready to return PlayStation Network “within a week” as claimed during a press conference held in Japan, and that the company is now testing the service internally.

No new ETA has been given on when PlayStation Network should resume.

Writing on the EU PlayStation blog, head of communications Nick Caplin said that Sony’s “utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.”

The cause of these newfound problems is the confirmed attack on the SOE servers. “We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers,” said Caplin, “and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system.”

“Trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen,” said Caplin.

PlayStation Network has been offline since April 20. When the service does return, Sony will offer all registered PS3 and PSP users will receive two free games, from an unspecified list, and a free month of PlayStation Plus.
