Sony has confirmed during its latest quarterly financial results that PlayStation 4 has now shipped 79 million consoles worldwide, with a staggering 19 million moved during the period April 1, 2017 – March 31, 2018.

This is actually down by one million compared to the previous financial year, although considering the PS4 is nearly five-years-old it's definitely nothing to turn your nose at. Looking ahead, the electronics heavyweight plans to shift an additional 16 million consoles during the 2019 fiscal year.

Note that the figure mentioned above pertains to the number of PS4s that have been shipped to retails, not the amount of consoles that are actually plonked under tellys. Sony confirmed back in January that actual PS4 sales were at 73.6 million, although that number has obviously increased since.

Microsoft is continuing to keep mum on how many Xbox One consoles it has managed to flog since its release in November 2013, although it's pretty safe to assume Sony has this generation in the bag.

Nintendo meanwhile confirmed earlier this week that Switch sales are now at 17.79 million.
