Speaking during an interview with Famitsu magazine (via Gematsu), Sony's Hiroyuki Oda confirmed that the format holder has no plans to launch a successor to the PlayStation Vita.
Furthermore, Oda-san revealed that Sony will be ceasing PS Vita production in Japan from next year. Presumably the US and Europe will follow too, although there's been no statement on its plans for western regions yet.
'Currently, we do not have any plans regarding a new handheld device,' he said. 'In Japan, we will manufacture PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, shipping will end.'
The PS Vita was released in Japan in December 2011 and released in the west the following year. Despite being capable of pumping out console-quality visuals and various multimedia features, the handheld failed to attract mainstream success, largely due to the rise in smartphone gaming.
Sony was also very quick to abandon support for PS Vita, with the lineup of first-party games for the system dwindling after its first year on the market.
Elsewhere, Oda revealed that the lineup of games for the newly-announced PlayStation Classic will differ in Japan and the west. In the meantime, here's a few we'd like to see included.
