Bert Nordberg, head of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, has given the clearest indication that the heavily rumoured PlayStation phone is real, stating that there’s no smoke without fire.
“There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere,” Nordberg said during an interview. “Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that’s very interesting.”
He added: “Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn’t we use that? Gaming, including content, is a very interesting proposition.”
An unnamed source told The Wall Street Journal that the phone will likely carry the current Sony Ericsson’s Xper ia brand.
Reports in October indicated that the The handset will share much of its design with the flip out PSPgo, with a dpad, triangle, circle, x and square buttons housed behind the screen. The unit will also feature shoulder buttons, plus a touchpad and touchscreen.
The phone is also rumoured to run Android 3.0, powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 512MB of RAM and 1GB of ROM. Games such as God of War, LittleBigPlanet and Modern Warfare are said to be on the way, with visuals on par with the PSP.
Adopting Sony Ericsson’s Xper ia brand does, however, suggest the phone won’t be as heavily focused on gaming that a “PlayStation” phone would indicate.
