Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai has revealed the platform holder is considering introducing a PSN subscription model, offering users premium content and services in addition to the free service currently in operation.

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network. Especially in the on-line area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services,” explained Hirai during today’s conference call with investors.

Earlier today a presentation slide, which stated SCE would seek a “new revenue stream from subscription”, sparked rumours that Sony would be introducing an Xbox LIVE style sub for online gaming on the PS3. The important thing to note is that Hirai stated subscription-based premium content and services will be offered “in addition” to the current free services.
