Sony is cancelling digital pre-orders for Gran Turismo Sport, according to a report by racing specialists Team VVV.

The site claims that players who pre-ordered the game via PlayStation Store are receiving messages informing them of the cancellation following last week’s decision to delay the racer into 2017.

“On 30th August 2016 we regrettably announced that the release of Gran Turismo Sport has been delayed until 2017,” the message allegedly states. “We do not have a new release date at this time. We have, therefore, decided to cancel your pre-order and refund your pre-order payment.

“Once we have a new release date for Gran Turismo Sport we will offer a revised pre-order for it on the PlayStation Store at the earliest opportunity. Thank you for your custom and please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.”

Cancelling pre-orders following the game’s delay seems a fairly unusual move. In fact, I’ve only ever heard about it happening once before, after the launch model for Hitman was “changed significantly” from its initial offering.

Gran Turismo Sport had previously been due to release in November but has since been pushed back to an unspecified date in 2017.

UPDATE: Twitter user @richard4481 has sent us an image of the message being sent to digital pre-order customers.
