Sony has announced that the long-rumoured ability to change your PlayStation Network name is officially in the works for PlayStation 4 users.

The format holder confirmed the news in a post on the PlayStation Blog, revealing that a beta for PSN ID Change (as it's officially known as) will be released in November, before rolling out to all PS4 owners in early 2019.

PSN ID Change is part of the PlayStation Preview Program, and will allow you to change your name as many times as you like. Sony's giving you the first change free, but after that you'll have to fork out $9.99; PlayStation Plus members will pay slightly less at $4.99.

One handy feature is that you can display your old ID once you change our name, just so your mates recognise you. Changing your PSN name is compatible with games published after April 1, 2018, as well as some of PS4's 'most-played' titles to date.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Sony notes that not all games for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita will support PSN ID Change.

'If for any reason you experience issues after changing your ID, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time (you will only be able to revert once during the preview program). Reverting back to an old ID will resolve most issues caused by the ID change,' reads the post.
