Reports from Japan suggest that the HD movie war could be coming to a fairly surprising end. If reports are to be believed, Sony, the developers of the Blu-ray format, and Toshiba, the developers of the HD-DVD format, could be coming together to create a single unified standard.
Blu-ray currently offers a larger capacity with maximum disc size of 50 Gb, but HD-DVD is said to be structurally pretty similar to current DVDs, therefore allowing makers to use their existing manufacturing equipment. A merger would potentially bring together the best aspects of each technology.
With Sony set to include Blu-ray technology in the PlayStation 3, this talk of a merger throws up some questions over whether this will still be the case. It would be a particularly brave (or stupid) move to use a technology that could be dead even before it has been fully rolled out. Whatever happens, we’ll keep you up to date on developments in a merger than could have large implications on future videogame consoles.
