It has been confirmed that Sony Online Entertainment has acquired the MMORPG, Matrix Online, from previous developer Monolith. The acquisition is rumoured to have put many of Monolith’s Matrix Online team out of work with only 26 employees being kept on.

We will also take steps to continue the same high level of service that subscribers have come to expect from The Matrix Online game,” said John Smedley, president SOE.

There are suggestions that Monolith is to leave the MMORPG genre behind to concentrate on single player and none massive multiplayer games.

In related news SOE has agreed a licensing agreement to develop a MMO based around the DC comics, which could feature characters such as Batman and Superman. The success of NCsoft’s City of Heroes is likely to have prompted an officially branded Superhero MMO.

SOE will work closely with Warner Bros and DC Comics to maintain authenticity,” promised Smedley.

Don’t get too excited at the prospect of a DC comic licensed MMO as the game is tentatively scheduled for a winter 2007 release.
