SEGA has confirmed the holiday 2011 release of Sonic Generations for Xbox 360 and PS3.

The game will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, delivering what SEGA hopes will be the “definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new”.

Sonic Generations sees Sonic the Hedgehog playable as both the much loved classic 1991 character, and the modern day hero he has become.

Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power creates ‘time holes’ which pull him and his friends back through time where he encounters some surprises from his history – including Classic Sonic.

The game is set across three defining eras from Sonic’s 20 years in video games, with recognisable environments re-built in HD and playable in both classic side scrolling 2D and a modern 3D style.

Classic Sonic features his trademark Spin Dash and Spin Attack special moves, while Modern Sonic will utilise his new arsenal of skills, the Homing Attack and Sonic Boost.

Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic must defeat this strange new enemy, save their friends, and find out who really is behind this diabolical deed.

We weren’t overly keen on Sonic 4: Episode 1, the most recent return to a retro styled Sonic experience, but we love the blue chap so much we’re more than willing to jump on board the Sonic Cycle and hope for the best with Generations.
