Sony has patented a new technology which can induce many of the senses, previously untapped, into the user’s brain. They hope to enhance the entertainment experience by creating the sense of smell, taste and touch.

Sony has been granted several patents outlining how the device will work. The device, put into simple terms, will fire pulses of ultrasound into the gamers head. These pulses will alter the neural activity in parts of the brain.

A whole new range of games based around cooking could break into the gaming market. Whilst such gimmicky games around the technology would no doubt emerge, imagine the enhancements that could be made to current franchises. You could smell the rotting flesh of Zombies in Resident Evil or the smell of gunpowder as you unload your weapon in Max Payne. This is all conjecture but such things could happen.
