Skylanders Battlegrounds will release exclusively on iOS next month, Activision has confirmed.

Speaking to Joystiq, Activision described the mobile game as a “console-like, action-RPG” which, like its home console counterparts, lets players import their Skylanders characters into the game.

The Battlegrounds Starter Pack will include a Bluetooth-operated Portal of Power, three Skylanders figures – Cynder, Jet-Vac and a special edition Royal Double Trouble – and a Platinum Treasure Chest containing “tons of digital items and consumables”.

The Starter Pack will retail at $49.99 in the US. VideoGamer.com was told previously that Skylanders Battlegrounds will retail at £39.99 in the UK.

Alternatively, the game will also be available as a separate download for “between $5 and $7”. That version does not require the Portal of Power, and lets players select characters they’ve unlocked via an on-screen icon.

Activision claims that Battlegrounds “looks like an Xbox 360 game on an iPad,” and Joystiq has been told that it will be regularly updated with “new, free chapters”. It has been suggested, but not confirmed, that the game is being developed by Vicarious Visions.

A precise release date for Skylanders Battlegrounds has yet to be announced.
