Thatgamecompany’s Sky: Children of the Light has racked up a whopping one million downloads on iOS within five days of release, according to data from Sensor Tower (via VGC).

The free-to-play indie is estimated to have brought in approximately $175,000 through in-app customisation purchases, and is sitting comfortably in the 28th spot on the iOS games download chart in the US, 4th in Japan and 6th in South Korea. Its performance is really impressive – to compare, the developer’s first mobile game Flower was released in 2017 and has generated $400,000 from 800,000 downloads over two years.

In an interview prior to launch, Thatgamecompany’s co-founder Jenova Chen explained that Sky was always destined for a mobile release, as this is the largest platform that gamers engage with. ‘I’m trying to make something like a Pixar movie. Something for the family to play together,’ he said. ‘Mobile phones have two billion players, but there are only 200 million consoles. That means 9 in 10 people haven’t used a console.’

Thatgamecompany plans to bring Sky: Children of the Light to other mobile platforms, and will also be coming to PC and consoles, at an as-of-yet unconfirmed date.
