Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that the SingStar series has now sold in excess of two million units. This success made the series Europe’s biggest new franchise in 2004.

The tremendous success of SingStar reflects our commitment to innovation and broadening the appeal of computer entertainment“, said Phil Harrison, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “For the third year running, SCEE’s London Studios have introduced another massive international hit“.

We have been overwhelmed by how warmly SingStar has been received by the music industry,” said Sergio Pimentel, music licensing and A&R manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “We have licensed more than 250 songs for the SingStar series to date, and we would like to thank all of the record companies and music publishers for their massive contribution to the success of the games.”

So far, three games have been released under the SingStar name: SingStar, SingStar Party and SingStar Popworld. The games each include two microphones and let players have a karaoke party in their living room. No further versions have been announced, but given the success of the first three titles, we wouldn’t be too surprised to see a SingStar Rap in the future. Perhaps Sony could take advantage of the current popularity of ringtones and release a game where you have to mimic over 50 of the most popular tunes. Ringtone Rivals perhaps.
