Gizmondo reports on a Nikkan Kogyo translation which confirms a 2009 mass production date for the new 45nm Cell – one of the core components of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console.
The move from a 65nm to 45nm Cell will result in a 40 per cent reduction in power consumption and as a result will generate less heat. Gizmondo notes that this could lead to the release of a slimmer PlayStation 3. The new Cell will also offer cheaper production costs which we hope will mean a lower priced PS3 for consumers.
The 45nm Cell is also expected to be used more widely in HD upscaling, something Toshiba is already doing with some of its TVs and DVD players.
