Shenmue 3’s graphics could be compromised in favour of funnelling the project’s funding into story, the game’s creator Yu Suzuki has told Eurogamer.

Shenmue 3 raised $6.3 million on Kickstarter, but while the game will be created to fit within the funds available, Suzuki says that additional cash money would obviously help.

“I could do with a bit more money! The game itself doesn’t have to be gorgeous visually – a lot of the money these days goes into the graphics. If we perhaps compromise on the graphics and put more into the story, we can make a good game. The most important thing, to me, is that the game’s interesting, and that it’s something people want to play.”

Let’s not forget that Shenmue 3 isn’t only being funded by crowdfunding.

“Kickstarter’s not the only source of money,” said Suzuki. “There’s also funding from Sony and Shibuya Productions.”

The team also opened up PayPal funding at TGS last month.

“Obviously, the more money we have the more we can do. Even if we don’t get as much budget as the previous games, we’ll still make this game.”

Shenmue 3 is scheduled to release at the end of 2017.
