Sony Pictures’ Shadow of the Colossus movie is to be directed by Josh Trank, according to a report on Deadline.

While Trank isn’t yet a household name, his was the director of super-powered sleeper hit Chronicle – a film which was put him on the goto list for bigger budget productions.

According to Deadline, Trank has been a fan of the game (we are too) ever since its release in 2005 on PlayStation 2 – if you’re yet to play it, the HD Collection on PS3 including Ico is well worth picking up.

Shadow of the Colossus centres on one young man’s struggle to slay 16 colossi in order to bring his dead lover back to life – all he has to keep him company on this adventure is his horse Agro.

Trank is clearly a man in high demand, also currently working on two Marvel superhero franchises: Fantastic Four for Fox and Spider-Man spinoff Venom for Sony Pictures.

While it’s easy to instantly dismiss the film as a terrible idea purely on the basis that video games turned into films are almost always awful, I can’t help but be excited about this. Trank is clearly a talent and if handled correctly Shadow of the Colossus could dazzle on the big screen.
