The Golden Compass is in development at Shiny Entertainment and is based on the upcoming motion picture, itself based on the first book in the award winning Dark Materials trilogy by British author Philip Pullman.

The game is set to ship during the busy Christmas release period, just prior to the release of the motion picture on December 7, 2007. We’re told to expect pivotal environments from the movie and vivid characters brought to life with likeness of the movie’s cast, which includes Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel and newcomer Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra Belacqua.

Players assume the role of Lyra, a young girl, along with her daemon Pantalaimon (Pan), as she travels through the frozen wastes of the North. She much collect special items in order to explore, evade and deceive her way through confrontation to rescue her friend who has been kidnapped by the mysterious organisation known as The Gobblers.

Gamers will also control Byrnison, a great armoured polar bear who joins the quest. He battles to protect Lyra during their journey using a riding mechanic and special attacks. Players will also be able to unlock secrets and mini-games using a mysterious truth-telling compass called an alethiometer.

The game will feature 13 expansive locations to explore, including all-new environments not seen the books or film.

The Golden Compass is currently in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PSP, Nintendo DS and PC for release late this year.
