SEGA has announced that it has opened a third UK studio, based in the West Midlands, which will focus exclusively on development for next-generation platforms.
Lead by Chris Southall, an industry veteran of sixteen years, the new studio already has its first project underway – an action adventure game due for release in late 2012.
“I am genuinely excited about the prospect of opening another studio at SEGA, particularly one co-located with our Technology Group,” commented Gary Dunn, Senior Vice President of Production.
“We have seen some great and truly innovative prototypes coming out of the designers, artists and tech staff that form our Technology Group, and we fully intend to keep innovation at the heart of the new studio by keeping close links with the Technology Group who will ensure that this happens.”
While the studio’s title could be for the new Xbox or PlayStation, it’s more likely to be the Wii U. After all, the studio’s first game is pencilled in for a late 2012 release, which fits quite neatly with the launch of Wii U – currently reported to be between April and November of the same year.
Microsoft’s new console isn’t likely to be revealed before next year’s E3, presumably launching the year after. A new PlayStation looks further even further away.
