Speaking to MTV, director Sam Raimi has revealed that the screenwriting process for the upcoming World of Warcraft movie has just begun and he’s got who he considers one of the best in the business on board to help – Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot).
“I’ve never made a video game movie, but my approach would be to work with the best character writer I can find, which in this case is Robert Rodat, and tell a great character story within the fantastic environment of the world of WarCraft, while staying true to their mythology,” said Raimi.
Earlier reports had suggested the movie would be based on novel Arthas: Rise of the Lich King (released April 2009), but new comments made by Raimi suggest the story will be an original effort based in the World of Warcraft universe.
“We want to be really faithful to the game…to the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents,” said Raimi. “I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible.”
He added: “We would choose… something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it. But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters.”
