Rust, the resource collecting, crafting, survival game from the makers of Garry’s Mod, has been an unexpected success, creator Garry Newman has told GamesIndustry.

“Yeah – we never, ever expected anything to dwarf GMod’s success,” Newman said. “We can’t really believe it.”

Garry’s Mod has sold 3.5 million copies, generating more than $22 million in revenue.

But in just one month, Rust made 40 per cent of what Garry’s Mod managed in nine years. Around a week later this figure has risen to 55 per cent – that’s profit to Facepunch Studios.

Rust is currently top of the Steam chart.
