Simply titled Table Tennis, the game is in development at Rockstar San Diego (Midnight Club series) and will ship for Xbox 360 at the budget price of $39.99 on May 22 in the US, arriving a few days later in Europe on May 26 at £29.99/â¬39.99. The decision to develop a Table Tennis game has left much of the gaming world a little shocked. This is what Sam Houser, Founder and Executive Producer of Rockstar Games had to say.

Our goal was to create a game that is perfectly addictive in its focused simplicity, a game that showcases the true possibilities of a next gen experience, not just in looks but in feel and pace,” said Houser. “We wanted to use the power of the new hardware and the resolution of new televisions to give the game an immediacy, an intensity and a sense of physicality and reality, resulting in a purer, more visceral experience that simply was not possible previously. It is a distillation of game design philosophy, focusing on removing the traditional areas of compromise inherent in managing size and scope and concentrating the hardware’s entire power on one activity, with the aim of doing that better than it’s ever been done before.

Sam is perhaps making too much of it (it is only Table Tennis), but you can’t say it isn’t an interesting move by Rockstar. It might not be any of the games we were expecting, but you can’t deny that it looks great.
