Trion Worlds, the studio behind Rift, has detailed why exactly 11 servers have been marked for upcoming trials.
These servers have been highlighted as having low populations and will be used for trial programs in the future, according to RiftJunkies.
“Bottom line is that we’re not merging any servers. The 11 shards in question are being turned into trial servers for a future large-scale trial promotion. We think the confusion is due to server-wide notifications that recommended players transfer their characters before the 1/18, which is when the reconfiguration will happen,” a Trion spokesperson told VideoGamer.com
Affected servers include Belmont, Galena, Atrophinius, Crucia, Alsbeth, Estrael, Shadefallen, Sunrest, Freeholme, Dayblind and Faemyst.
Users playing on one of the 11 trial servers are being encouraged to move to another server before January 18 and will be given a free transfer if they choose to do so.
Additionally new character creation for subscribers has been disabled so the populations will quickly be lowered.
The trials are planned to be used again for a non-subscriber playerbase.
Recently Trion introduced cheaper subscriptions for users.
This suggests Rift may be testing the waters for a future in free-to-play, or potentially extended trials similar to what World of Warcraft currently has available.
