According to sources close to the Japanese giant, Nintendo will only show video footage of next-gen products at E3, keeping the Revolution hardware and specs for a later date. They will however show off an update to the GBA – “categorically not the GBA2” according to Nintendo – and talk about the future of the Wi-Fi powered DS online component.
For a while now, Nintendo has talked about showing something of its home console plans at this year’s event but it has always remained tight-lipped about just how much it’s going to give away. By only showing video footage rather than give any meaningful information away, it seems they would rather try to build on the success they’ve had with the DS and GBA rather than compete with the hype surrounding the PS3 and Xbox 360 demonstrations taking place at the expo.
The GBA update is likely to be a system that incorporates external components already available (such as the Play-Yan adapter for playing downloadable games and videos) and possibly a Wi-Fi connectivity component – something Nintendo seem keen on these days. Keeping with Wi-Fi for the moment, the show is also set to feature more information about the DS online service which has already been announced as a partnership with IGN (see here) and is expected to be rolled out across the globe before the end of the year.
Whilst all this talk of handheld gaming may get those of you who prefer home consoles a little down, don’t despair too much; Nintendo still have the first playable demo of a certain game beginning with Z up their sleeve…
(And we don’t mean that rubbish game about a ninja ant)
