Return of the Obra Dinn, a first-person mystery set aboard an East Indian merchant ship in the 1800s, will arrive on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 later this year.

Developed by the creator of Papers, Please Lucas Pope, Return of the Obra Dinn was initially released for PC in 2018. A logic puzzle game, the player takes on the role of an insurance adjuster for the East India Company who must investigate a ship that has docked with all of its crew dead or missing. Using the Memento Mortem, the player may watch and listen to the final moments of the bodies found on the Obra Dinn to understand what fate befell the ship.

Most striking is its unique art style, mimicking the 1-bit visuals of old Mac games. ‘I've always had a nostalgia-softened spot in my heart for 1-bit graphics,’ Pope said. ‘I'd like to capture the detailed black and white look of old Mac games in a realtime first person game. I plan to push it grittier and less cartoon-like than those old games.’

Consider the cold case cracked open once again for console players, as Return of the Obra Dinn docks on to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 this autumn.
