Microsoft has announced the Resident Evil 5 demo has been downloaded more than 1.8 million times on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

The bulk of these downloads came in a three day period following the demo’s release in North America and Europe on January 26, notching up over 1.3 million downloads and setting a new record on Xbox LIVE.

The demo features support for two player co-op and is set near the beginning of the game, with players able to tackle the Assembly Place and Shanty Town levels. The demo has three levels of co-op play: single-player with AI support, two-player split-screen on a single Xbox 360 and two-player across Xbox LIVE.

The demo was released on PSN earlier this week.

Resident Evil 5 is scheduled for release on March 13 for Xbox 360 and PS3.
