According to Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrinne, there was a six month period when the upcoming Xbox 360 thriller was being developed as an open-world, sandbox game.

Speaking at the DICE gaming conference, Myllyrinne admitted that it would have been a bad decision to stick with the open-world Alan Wake.

“When a player turns up in a monster truck to a love scene, you know you’re doing something wrong,” he said.

He added that an open-world version of the game allowed players to go anywhere, preventing the studio from controlling the flow of the story and action as they wished. After six months and several million dollars of development, it was decided to scrap the open-world approach in favour of a more tightly controlled, linear experience.

By all accounts, Remedy’s decision has been a good one; early impressions of the game are very positive.

Alan Wake is scheduled for release on May 21, only on Xbox 360.
